School Reopening Guidelines: Ogun State Model

INTRODUCTION

The outbreak of Coronavirus disease
(Covid-19) which was later declared a
pandemic, negatively affected all facets
of the society. Educational Institutions
in the country including Ogun State
were closed down to curtail the spread
of the disease. The major focus of this
document is therefore to look into the
challenges and identify possible
solutions that will ultimately facilitate
re-opening of schools.

NOTICEABLE SYMPTOMS:
Most common symptoms:
Fever, Dry cough and Tiredness

Less common symptoms:
Aches and pains, Sore throat, Diarrhea
Conjunctivitis, Headache, Loss of taste or smell, rashes on skin, or dis-colouration of fingers or toes

Serious symptoms:
Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, Chest pains or pressure, Loss of speech or movement

RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS FOR
EXAMINATIONS : CONCERNS AND
PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Concerns (Proposed solutions)

  • Inadequate health facilities (Creation of isolation rooms, first aid kits to be provided for schools)
  • Poor ventilation (Improved ventilations in all classrooms and public facilities)
  • Inadequate learning space in line with the best practice of physical distancing (Ensure re-arrangement of seats with at least 2m spaces in-between for halls and 30 students maximum in classrooms)
  • Non-challant attitude to personal hygiene (Restriction of food vendors and provision of handwashing materials, hand sanitizers)
  • Students with special needs (Inclusive care and monitoring)

HEALTH PROTOCOLS IN SCHOOLS DURING
EXAMINATIONS:
•Provision of water and soap for regular
handwashing at designated points
•Provision of sanitizers and infrared
thermometers
•Creation of Isolation Rooms (Health
Bay)
•Creation of Isolation Class-
room/Examination Halls to take care of
Covid-19 prone learners and teachers
•Availability of trained health workers
by the Health Ministry
•Appointment and Training of Teacher
(s) as Covid-19 Ambassadors/Champions
•Actioning Protocols by School health
workers and Covid-19 Ambassadors.

SCHOOL REOPENING GUIDELINES
FOR EXAMINATION PURPOSE
◦Teachers, learners and other personnel
should endeavour to maintain social
distancing at all times
◦Mask wearing is compulsory and MUST be
worn appropriately. Parents/Guardians must
provide face masks for their wards
◦All sporting activities suspended till further
notice
◦Any learner who is ill MUST stay at home
◦Body temperatures of both teachers and
learners must be below 38⁰
◦Regular Handwashing by learners and
personnel must be done at every opportunity
◦Unnecessary visitors are not allowed in
schools
◦Specific visitors welcomed should adhere
strictly to all COVID-19 prevention protocols
◦Food Vendors are not allowed in schools. All
learners are encouraged to bring their food
and water from home.

GUIDELINES FOR RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS FOR EXAMINATION

CAVEAT
The following guidelines should be followed
before public and private schools/hostels are
re-opened for examination. Failure on strict
compliance attracts strict sanction(s)

RESPONSE PLAN ON DETECTION
OF COVID-19 SYMPTOMS AMONG
TEACHERS AND LEARNERS BY
COVID-19 CHAMPIONS AND HEALTH
WORKERS:
-Ensure you put on gloves and face masks
before attending to the affected person
– Check the temperature if it is above 380
– Refer or accompany the affected person to
Health Isolation Room immediately
– Call any of the toll free lines for urgent at-
tention
– Daily temperature check before admit-
tance into school premises
– Demonstrate proper preventive practices
to learners daily
– Emphasize on hair hygiene rather than
weekly change of style
– Ensure monitoring of hand washing before
entering the class/examination Hall

BOARDING FACILITIES
◦Parents should ensure their wards are
Covid-19 free before being admitted to the
school hostel
◦All new and returning borders should be
adequately tested with infrared thermome-
ters before being admitted in line with the
directive of the Health Ministry
– All basic health protocols such as hand
washing at designated spots, alcohol-based
sanitizers, social distancing rules and use of
facemask should be strictly adhered to.
– Sporting activities are suspended among
borders
◦There should be a designated isolation
room for borders.
